What criteria do you use to decide what sources would be appropriate for a nonfiction piece that is destined for a national audience? Do you stay local, within your region (i.e., Midwest), or just choose a broad segment? For example, if I am doing an article on animal rescue organizations, should I just contact the ones in my city or state, in my region, or pick several from throughout the country?

That depends on the editorial requirements of your target market. Some publications want exclusive local references (such as local newspapers and magazines) others don't care where the information comes from as long as it is accurate. In the case of your animal rescue piece, that might work for either a local publication or national depending on the slant,
