I wrote a piece about a friend of mine who had cancer. It mostly discuses the life she lead while recieving treatments. The trouble I am having is that I am not really sure how to classify it in terms of short story magazines. The piece is actually the first chapter to a book I wrote but I would like to get it published in a short story magazine before seeking out an agent. If anyone has any ideas on what magazines would be receptive to this type of work please let me know.

If your book is already done, I would start to find and agent or publisher, even if you don't get the first chapter published elsewhere. But, I would, at the same time, look into some markets for the first chapter if it holds up as an essay by itself. I write nonfiction too, and I'm finding it hard to know where to submit some of the personal essays. I've had a little luck with Chicken Soup for the Soul-- they are asking for stories about hard times right now, your story may qualify (go to their website). Also, Cup of Comfort may be another place. Otherwise, you could possibly look for magazines that are about health or something.

good luck
