When requesting these from a magazine do you write them a letter in the form of a query to the editor? Clearly I'm new to submitting articles...Thanks |

Hi Nancy, Generally a magazine's website will have a page detailing their submission guidelines. Sometimes they take a bit of searching to find because a magazine's site is laid out with readership in mind, not contributors. Not all magazines seem to offer a break on a sample copy, but as far as I know any magazine will send you one for the appropriate amount of money and your address. How much that may be, as well as where to send it, is also generally addressed on the guidelines page. If not, simply send them an email to the address on their "contact" page and ask. Once the problems with the Writer's Market site are sorted out you should be able to get web addresses and general market information for most markets. However, some markets, even major ones, are not listed for one reason or another. So, if you have one in mind that isn't coming up on the Market, do a Google search on the magazine's name and you should find the website easily enough. Just be sure to bookmark it! If you're within a reasonable distance from a book store, you may be able to save yourself some time by checking out their magazine section. Some of the larger chains, like Borders and Barnes & Noble, have very good magazine sections where you might actually find the one you want to submit to. I would also definitely check with any "mom & pop" bookstores if you're lucky enough to have one or more in your area. Best of luck to you! |

Also, never forget the power of your main library which usually has back issues of magazines you may be interested in. That kind of refrence material is valuable when tailor making queries for magazines. The advice given seems to be right on the money here as far as getting a sample copy. Check every kind of bookstore you can as well as websites to get as much information as possible about the magazine. God bless. P.R.E.Z. |
