Hello, I'm new to this wesbite and I have a question for anyone who can answer. I currently finished my manuscript and am wondering how important it is to get an agent before sending my manucript out to publishers. I'm sure there are benefits, but what are they? Is this something I should strongly consider as a first time publisher?

Any information or advice anyone has is extremely helpful.

Thanks,

Leanna

As far as I know, in the US anyway, most major publishing houses won't accept material that is not represented by an agent.  If you're in Canada, like me, there's a little more wiggle room because there are not many literary agents to be found.  There's a good newsletter www.guidetoliteraryagents.com/ that you may find helpful and in Writer's Market you will find agents and also it will tell you what publishers take material that doesn't come from an agent, but heads up, most of them will want one.  Smaller publishing houses too are often a good place to start.  Hope this helps a little.

I was at a conference last most, and an editor from Simon and Schuster said it was illegal for them to accept unagented manuscripts.  I thought that was strange but never heard it explained.

I'd say get it published any way you can.  It's not easy to get an agent or a publisher.
