Depending on my mood or the respective moods of my characters the music I listen to changes.

I'd like to know about how it is for others.

Currently - Tom Waits

I honestly cant write sometimes w/ out music as a guide - gives me the ability to flow from one sense of emotion to another.  It touches some emotional part of me that allows my creativity to flow.

I listen to alot of music that is reflected on the Twilight soundtrack but I do prefer rock - alternative - emo genre when I write.  My favorite service is Itunes - I have found many a great artist that way.  I do like unknown artists, predominantly - less commercialized.

I've created playlists on Myspace page to fit whatever I'm writing about. I have eight so far:

Profile Playlist - Music that defines me.

Ode to Brigid - Celtic stuff.

Macabaret - Tunes in minor keys for sinister showgirls.

Viper - The real reason Eve was banished from the Garden of Eden.

Memoirs of an 80s Rocker Chick - Rock and roll to conjure images of fringe jackets, denim miniskirts, and empty cans of AquaNet.

Dark and Moody - What to listen to when you’re just not in the mood to be cheered up.

Cool Covers - Interesting versions of my favorite songs.

Good Stuff - Anything worth listening to that doesn’t fit into any of the above categories.

I mostly listen to instrumental stuff, mostly soundtracks. Some of my favorites are Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Jade Empire, The Fountain, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, and a guy by the name of Gustavo Santaolalla. The opening bits of "Why so Serious?" off of the Dark Knight soundtrack can get pretty trippy when you put it on repeat.

As far as actual bands go, I like stuff that tends to be more ambient or moody. Certain tracks by NIN nails (almost the entire Fragile album), Isis, Opeth, certain tracks by Tool, some of Apocalyptica's older stuff.

I tried doing classical once, but aside from Holst's "Mars" and Beethoven's 9th, I found most of it to be too flowery for my taste.

I write without any music at all.  I work in front of a large second story window.  Only distracted by the birds and the weather.  After reading about everyone Else's music I feel a little weird.  I only listen to music in the car.  I have never studied, read or written with it in the background.  I find it distracting, not motivating.  Don't you wish I didn't listen to it while I'm driving?!

I also write without music in front of a second story window.  I love music, but I find it incredibly distracting when I'm writing.  I also find the phone, people, dogs, tv and everything else but food distracting while I'm writing.  Best is an empty, quiet house.  Rare, but best.
