Just in case I screwed up, as I often do while trying to punch through a comment response, thanks reiterated for providing that info about Avatars.

Thanks for the research and the kind words. I don't really know yet why I'm on Wordpress or what I'm going to do with it. I've kind of hit a wall on my novel project, and I guess I'm looking for some kind of motivation. The problem I have with much of the stuff in cyberspace is that most of the providers take it for granted that one already understands the jargon and the terms. They need to understand that there are graying surfers like myself who learned to write by dipping a stick pen into an inkwell on a little lift-top school desk. The concept was much simpler back then. Oh, yes.

Your profile comment about Southeast Asia, "as it turns out, no one should have seen" makes me think you were stationed in or near Vietnam. I was in the Air Force during the Vietnam conflict, but never had the bad luck to be ordered to that hellhole. I did fifteen months in Taipei, Taiwan which was close enough for me. Did press my luck though, by reenlisting.
My wife and I just did our annual viewing of "Treasure of The Sierra Madre". Bogie is the man.

I really think if you do the work, you'll be amazed at how much it will help.

Wow! Thanks for the advice. I'll also look at the package you mentioned.

I think I did defer backstory as you did, because I started with a 7000 word narrative. Since I'm just getting started, time will tell what works best for me - I surely don't know yet! :)

Best of luck on your novel!

    Hello,

Thank you for leaving a comment on my blog. I'm new to the site and almost giddy at bing able to hear about everyone's experience. I don't want to re-invent the wheel...

I wouldn't do it again. I'd be careful about submitting my piece to an editor who would welcome it, but I think this was meant to happen.

I look forward to checking out what you are doing, I.R. Griffith!

yeah, I exaggerated a little. Actually, to keep track of agencies I'm interested in submitting to, I bought a small sprial notebook. On each page I list the name, address, email address and agent. As well, I make a note of what they want in a query--first five pages, synopsis what have you--and their average response time. I also put a few personal touches to insert into the query. When I send the query to that particular agent, I mark the date at the top of the page. When I get a response, I mark that.

It's a little low-budget, no computers or spreadsheets, or anything. But it works well for me and I can add my notes as I go.

    Good luck with everything!

    N~
