Karen Winters SchwartzMental illness is still so very misunderstood. I commend you for helping your nephew. Dr. E. Fuller Torrey, author of Surviving Schizophrenia, calls schizophrenia the modern day equivalent of leprosy. Schizoaffective disorder is on the continuum between bipolar and schizophrenia -- it’s really not a combination of all three. Think of it as a line, with schizophrenia on one end and bipolar on the other, with schizoaffective disorder somewhere in-between. There’s still controversy, but most doctors believe its more in the schizophrenic realm. For example: primary symptoms are delusions and hallucinations, but with manic features. It’s all very complicated, and more and more, the lines blur. Some of the newer meds are used to successfully treat both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a great source of information. www.nami.org . Check it out.
