    Are Writers Conferences Worth It?

Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 10:32 AM EST [General]

    Hi All,

I am new to this so please treat me like that German exchange student you were assigned to help out in middle school; speak slowly and be really nice even though you have better things to do.  I am an agentless ,unpublished author of children's books and came upon The Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators website.  Turns out they have a big conference every winter and I am thinking about registering.  What do you think?  Are they worth it?  What happens there?  I only have 3 finished manuscripts, (don't be impressed- children's lit, people!) is that enough to be taken seriously?  The conference is 2 days and costs close to $500 not including a midtown New York hotel room for the night. I need some serious guidance.  Please advise!

Thanks for any help you can offer!

    Kim

I hope you make some great connections! The last conference I went to upped my confidence in writing a great deal.

. . . and will hopefully not turn into some crazed, agent-stalker before then.

    That statement made me chuckle.

    Good luck!

Or would "break a leg" be more appropriate?
