About Me: I am a professional librarian by day, writer and hoping to also add freelance editing and proofreading, by night!

What I Write: Fiction that mainly focuses on the southern Appalachians as a locale and strong female characters. I like weave the unexpected into narrative, either as magical realism or straightforward supernatural.

Nonfiction, from blogging and memoir, to freelance articles on women's issues, education, and research.

Hobbies Reading, blogging, and knitting. I'm discovering container gardening. I'm also a new mother to an 8-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl.

Music: Blues. Folk with blues soul. I am deep into Lucinda Williams right now. I also love Neko Case, James McMurtry (yes, son of Larry), Tori Amos, B.B. King, Led Zeppelin, Bessie Smith, John Lee Hooker, and Dolly Parton.

Favorite Movies: Amelie, Jaws (the original), Gran Torino, Little Miss Sunshine, Lady in the Water, Smoke Signals, Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Unlimited, and Lost in Translation (and anything with Katharine Hepburn)

Heroes: My mother; my 8-year-old stepson with epilepsy, ADHD, and the best sense of humor, imagination, and kindness of any child I've ever met (when he's not trying to charm his way into or out of something); and Gandhi.
