    The Writing Life

Tuesday, October 28, 2008, 02:57 PM EST [General]

So I made my deadline even though my fever soared over 100 degrees. Hurray! And so far, no editor has contacted me for re-writes.

Now my attention has to turn to re-invoicing a couple of editors who haven't paid me yet. Any advice from other freelancers out there? I'd hate to alienate an editor who could give me work in the future, but at the same time I have to be assertive about receiving pay for my work!

I'm thinking once the checks start rolling in I might invest in some bookkeeping software like Quicken to keep everything straight. The bad news is I have too many things going on to keep them in my head. The good news is I have a lot things going on and I need a more sophisticated system! Any tips or horror stories?

Next on my desk is a short article about Pearl S. Buck's House in Perkasie, PA. This is a great place to go for a peek into one writer's life! I was there on a beautiful clear day and got some nice photos of the gardens still tended by one of her adopted daughters. When I arrived, there was a picnic going on for families who had adopted children through PSB's foundation. What an inspiring person she was!

    Flu

Wednesday, October 22, 2008, 11:08 AM EST [General]

Hi Writers. So here I am on the couch, under a blanket, trying to make my deadline. I came down with the flu yesterday, way too early in the season in my opinion. This article is for a relatively well-paying in-flight magazine, so I don't want to mess up and send it in late. All-in-all, it's a lot easier to write when I'm sick than do my regular day job, so I'm sure I will make my deadline.

And why am I typing a blogpost when I should be preparing a manuscript? Well, I'm waiting for my accompanying photos to upload to Picasa. I have found that's the best way to make my photos available to editors. I have tried snailmailing them on a CD-ROM and sending multiple emails with one or two shots in each, but I've been using Picasa lately and it seems to be the best method for all. I can upload the photos and the editor can select and download the photos they like best. It does take awhile to upload the hi-res photos, though.

This article is about the railroad destinations in Lancaster County, PA. I thought this was a cool shot through the observation car of the Strasburg Rail Road looking at the locomotive.

    Hi Margaret,

Hopefully by now you are not only feeling better but have that article well on its way.

I'm actually writing to comment on the idea you shared of sending a query a day. I love that idea and am going to take it up. Thanks!

Wow, awesome perspective shot of the locamotive on your blog! Do you do much photography? Or, was that one just for fun? How often do you incorporate photos into your prose submission packages to publications?

I took some photos of my feline service animal on an old steam engine during vacation that you might get a kick out of. One of them is on my blog, if you want to see it. He's peaking out of his Sherpa travel bag, which is sitting on the steam engine's inside rail car seat. Kimo loves traveling, but the old steam engine made too much noise for his liking that day.

What a great advantage, being a librarian & a writer. I suppose anything that you could possibly want to look up, is at your fingertips!

Here's one for you; this question stumped firemen from around the USA that I've asked. Perhaps I should've been asking a librarian instead? In the early 1970's there was a material used in making children's clothing that was outlawed. What was it? Firemen I've asked say they remember the story, something about flamabillity of the material for children's clothes, but nobody can tell me the name of the material for certain. I've got a nonfiction article I've been working on for quite a long time, but that one detail seems to ellude my research capabilities. If you could let me know how to research that, I'd really appreciate it!

Hmmm. I'm surprised that with your high interest in music, that you haven't written an article about it, yet. Is there a particular reason? Just wondering.

Ah, I see you also write about produce grown in NJ. Do you do much gardening yourself? Since I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian, I do as much gardening as my sore muscles will allow, to cut down on grocery bills. It's like having a grocery store in your own back yard! I like growing the strange stuff that folks don't see often. Do you write about mainstream produce, or, do you highlight the odd edibles, too?

You've only been writing since 2008 & you've got about 25 published articles already? Wow, you must be very proud of your success! Not everyone can blossom that quickly in this field. Congratulations!!! You must be doing something right, for sure. A lot of writers submit their work for a long time before finding the success that you have already.

I see you enjoy quilting. I made a wall quilt for a friend using their wedding photos & PC printable quilt squares. Have you worked with those, yet? It's a neat way to personalize quilts. My grandma helped with the sewing aspect. I'm just the computer geek who knew how to create the personalized quilt squares. Tell me about some of your favorite quilts you've created?

If you'd like to have fun taking a couple polls, learning about disabilities & service animals, & seeing some cool photos, come check out my blog (address is below this paragraph). Pardon the ongoing construction, as these are the 1st three blogs I've ever written. I wish they had grammar & spell check in this Community blog site! Feel free to leave comments at will. I reply to all. New posts are added relatively often.

Sorry to hear that you've got the flu. I do hope you get better, soon. Take care. Keep finding & making reasons to smile.

Thanks Margaret! I joined the SCBWI and am planning on attending not only the big conference in February, but the smaller regional conferences held through out the year. Thanks for helping make this big step!
