About This Group

One of the big rules repeated over and over again for writers is that we should read, whether that's being familiar with a magazine or journal to which we are submitting or just learning from other masters of our craft, or simply for enjoyment.

I keep looking at the photograph of Marilyn Monroe reading Ulysses sitting on my desk; reportedly, she loved the book and read it out loud, but struggled with understanding it. She's not alone; just ask any English major.

Sometimes, in the quest to write and get published, it's easy to forget that reading is not only something for fun, but also a vital part of our process.

And seeing what some of our agents and editors read is a great way of getting to know what they're looking for.

So, what are you reading?

That sounds interesting, AJ. And confusing from a writer's perspective, but excellent when pulled off.

That sounds like fun. I'm interested in how the number of same-sex relationships and the lgbtq community are represented in fiction. I'm probably biased, but I think that writers have an advantage in their portrayal over other genres in making the ch

I read over the weekend. Good book, easy read, engaging writing and characters. Yet I realized today as I was getting dressed, and spied it sitting on my desk, something interesting about this book, which is that the characters and plot are essential

Here is a to my review at goodreads. I can't say it enough: this graphic novel is breathtaking in its scope and complexity. It's not just the story told in comic form, cells and color and lines, it's how the story takes those cells and puts them n

Happy New Year!

So, it's the new year, and I'm pretty excited about that. Writing-wise, I've started a new challenge: 200,000 words in a year, both fiction, creative nonfiction, and anything aimed toward eventual publication. Luckily, though, the kind administrators of the challenge are letting us count our rough draft numbers, not the finalized numbers. I don't know about you all, but I tend to write a lot, and then cut, write more, cut, etc. as I revise. It does make keeping track of the numbers a challenge, though.

Reading-wise, well, I've thought about doing a challenge, too. 50 books in a year? What do you all think, would you all be up for that challenge? It's fun to keep track and see what we've read. And sometimes we might find some surprising discoveries, such as reading patterns, both in what we've read, and in our habits.

On the other hand, when it comes to reading, I'm not so much about quantity anymore, and I have one quantitative challenge on my plate. I'd rather concentrate on reading what I like, so what I'll do is put up the challenge in the forum-- and anyone who wants can post their progress along the way.

And hopefully, in a year or two, some of my 200,000 words, refined down from the jumble of letters, words, and incomplete phrases, will be something worthy of putting on your "to.read" list.

So what about you? Any new years challenges and goals when it comes to your reading?
