    Reading roundup

Wednesday, December 17, 2008, 11:16 AM EST [General]

I've posted a new forum post in the "What are you Reading?" group for Tiffanie DeBartolo's God-Shaped Hole. As always, I'd like to remind you that we welcome new members and lots of posts-- reading is just as important as writing-- especially if you want to write well. We're not a reading group in that this isn't a place for us all to read the same book and then discuss it-- it's just a place to talk reading as a whole. Come on by, tell us what you're reading, and offer me some suggestions for what other content you'd like to see within the group pages.

Also, just a reminder: if you want to see what life is like for some of the editors and designers (and me) of Writer's Digest Books, you should be checking out the Farmers and Writers group blog. It's an interesting chance to see everyone's different perspectives on working in the media and living in the midwest (except for Robert, currently down South). Check it out, and drop us a note to say hi. We don't bite. :)

What do you all think of this?

Friday, November 21, 2008, 03:02 PM EST [General]

I've been reading the Rejecter blog, and I find this situation alarming. And Amazon.com were out of stock when I checked the book.

Now, as per my usual caveats, aka: I like to examine all arguments from all angles before I state my opinions (which doesn't mean I haven't formed one, just that I'm not sharing it until I know it's right-- though, of course, I'm always right, haha), and obviously, without reading the actual book, I can't say whether it's libelous, slanderous, or and other -ous, or not.

I'm also not going to discuss my opinions on Scientology. I know people who think the scientologists are a cult but I don't know any Scientologists myself.

What kind of power should a group have against someone who speaks out against them? And do you think Amazon et al should be giving in to these demands or forcing their "legal battle" to court?

So, opinions? Is this author slandering scientology, or do the Scientologists have something to hide?

On a possibly unrelated note: the other day was the 30th anniversary of the Jonestown Massacre. Perhaps some lessons to be learned there?

Vanessa, I don't know if you went over to my blog post--I did put up some links & info there about how Good Reads is supposed to help authors.

Glad you're having fun with it as a reader!

This looks like one of those heat radar pictures--like how the alien from the Predator movies sees people.
